Panamanians Demand Social
Improvements
New forces Wednesday joined the
demands of the Panamanian
government encouraging a new
re-nationalization in its
attempt to avoid the rise in the
electric tariffs.
Despite the current
administration of President
Martin Torrijos had nothing to
do with the privatization of the
energy field, endorsed by
Ernesto Perez" government eight
years ago, this will be in
charge of facing the demands of
a population every time more
angry.
The National Front in Defense of
Economical and Social Rights (Frenadeso),
the Movement for National
Dignity and Unity (Modina),
newly created in the country,
headed the demonstration in
protest against the new rise.
Frenadeso, leading the strikes
that rocked Panama in mid 2005
and counting with the support of
other progressive leaders, now
members of Modina, is the
organization with the largest
popular prospect to become a
political party in the future.
Modina and Frenadeso have
already taken their written
demands to the National Assembly
and the Presidency of the
Republic respectively.
Frenadeso proposes a
re-nationalization of
electricity and telephony public
services, the implementation of
a national energy policy aimed
at reducing the current
dependence on foreign oil
companies, a reduction of fuel
prices, salary increase for
workers among other demands.
Panamanian National Front in
Defense of Economical and Social
Rights demanded immediate and
detailed information on the Free
Trade Area with the US and with
Chile recently negotiated.
