President Pacheco Defends Himself; Asks For Calm and Restraint
President Abel Pacheco told news reporters yesterday that he was glad that the political campaign was over and that now he could speak out against all the accusations thrown at him for the poor showing of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC) and leader Ricardo Toledo.

President Pacheco said that the attacks on him were orchestrated by Toledo, who critizized him for his government's poor record, reminding everyone that Toledo until last year was part of his government for the first three years.

Pacheco also accuses former president Rafael Angel Calderon for more attacks and for saying that it was Pacheco's fault for the PUSC's failure.

The president also called on all Costa Ricans to maintain the calm while the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones counts the vote and make the results of Sunday's election official.

"As president of the Republic and a citizen I feel obligated in a call to all Costa Ricans and leaders of the political parties to adopt an attitude of calm, restraint and civic responsibility", said Pacheco in his weekly press conference.

Pacheco added "I renew my absolute faith in the integrity of the magistrates of the TSE and the transparency of the electoral system in Costa Rica."

"I warn the winner, who it may be, as I have no preference, that the country is divided and there has to be dialogue and a profound respect for their adversaries and that they not be enemies', the president said.
