ACP Countries Favor Stable Haiti
The Council of Ministers of the
Asia-Caribbean-Pacific (ACP)
Countries said on Tuesday that
the elections in Haiti must lead
to “institutionalism, stability
and development.”
ACP President Onofre Rojas, from
the Dominican Republic, recalled
that Haiti is one of the
Caribbean ACP countries, and
asked for international
cooperation to strengthen its
institutions and to reinstall a
viable model of development.
At the latest meeting of the
group, he said, all 79 member
countries issued a resolution
expressing solidarity with the
Haitian people and wishing them
successful elections.
Rojas, who is the National
Coordinator of the Dominican
Government for European Funds
for Development, said in a brief
press release that the Dominican
presidency of the group will
allow for better cooperation
between Europe and Haiti.
He said that the country and
President Leonel Fernández are
interested in helping Haiti to
find a definite solution to the
deep crisis that has affected
that country over the past few
years.
“We call for the attention of
all multilateral institutions
and from First World countries,”
he stressed, “to take advantage
of this excellent opportunity to
make a genuine effort to rebuild
the poorest country in the
region.”
