Panama Called for June LatAm
Summit
Panama convened a Summit of
Heads of State and Government in
June to mark the 180th
anniversary of the Congress
Simon Bolivar led in 1826 before
the final battle for the
liberation of the Bolivarian
Republics from the Spanish
colonial rule.
First Vice President and Foreign
Minister of Panama Samuel Lewis
Navarro made the announcement at
the end of the 11th
Colombia-Panama Meeting on
Tuesday.
He recalled that Bolivar
convened from Lima, Peru, what
he called "Congreso Anfictionico,"
two days before the Battle of
Ayacucho, which opened the path
towards independence of the
Bolivarian Republics (Venezuela,
Bolivia, Peru, Colombia,
Ecuador).
The Panamanian territory will
again be available for Latin
American nations to get together
and mark a great cultural,
academic, political event, said
Lewis Navarro.
"We present the idea here on
Tuesday with the objective of
highlighting the historical
importance and political
validity of the integration
project left by The Liberator,"
he stressed.
We look forward to welcome
dignitaries and other figures in
June to hold a summit and pay
tribute to the Anfictionic
Congress, he concluded.
