Argentina-Uruguay Paper Quarrel
Argentine President Nestor
Kirchner and the governor of
Entre Rios province, Jorge Busti,
plan to meet Monday to analyze
the dispute with Uruguay over
the construction of two paper
mills along the common border.
Kirchner will welcome Busti this
afternoon at the executive
headquarters, in moments when
environmentalists in the
Argentinean province are
challenging the construction of
the factories on the bordering
Uruguayan locality of Fray
Bentos.
For four consecutive days,
neighbours and members of the
Gualeguaychu Environmental
Assembly in Entre Rios have
blocked the route at the San
Martin Bridge, which links both
countries.
Buenos Aires sustains the
projects will pollute the
Uruguay river, which divides the
two nations.
It also indicates that
Montevideo did not provide all
the requested information on the
environmental impact of the
project, under implementation by
the companies Ence (Spain) and
Botnia (Finland) since last
year.
