Quake
Shakes South Peru
A
4.5-degree earthquake on the
Richter scale hit Monday the
Peruvian department of Arequipa,
621 miles south of Lima, with no
victims or material damages.
The tremor, located 11 miles
northeast of Camana, struck at
8:06 local time (13:06 GMT),
unleashing panic among residents
who feared the collapse of their
houses.
According to Peru’s Geophysics
Institute, this is the country´s
largest intensity quake in many
years, and had a 50-mile deep
epicenter.
Last year, Peru registered over
150 earth tremors when the
annual average is 100.
Peru is located in the Pacific´s
volcanic belt, one of the most
active seismic zones of the
world due to the confrontation
of pressures between the
Continental and Nazca Plates
