ELECTION 2006
Toledo and Calderon Blame
Pacheco For PUSC Results
Sunday
Ricardo Toledo Carranza is
blaming his former boss,
president Abel Pacheco, for his
failure in the polls and the
poor results of the Partido
Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC).
The PUSC alternated governing
the country with the Partido
Liberacion Nacional (PLN) for
many years, however, on Sunday,
the PUSC was destroyed,
obtanining only 3.457% (when the
counting stopped) of the popular
vote.
Supporing Toledo in blaming
Pacheco is former PUSC president
Rafael Angel Calderon, who along
with former PUSC president,
Miguel Angel Rodríguez and are
both accused of accepting bribes
and waiting trial. Both Calderon
and Rodríguez spent time in jail
while under preventive detention
and now are free on bail.
Toledo said yesterday that the
party is not destroyed. He was
quick to point out that they
still have elected five
legislative deputies who have a
voice in the shaping of the
country.
"The principal cause is the
people punishing the President
for his bad performance. The
voters did not punish Toledo,
this is clear", said former
president Calderon.
Toledo was minister for the
presidency in Pacheco's
government until early last year
when he resigned to run for the
presidency. Many believe it was
his performance during his term
in office that led to his defeat
and not only on Pacheco's poor
standing in the opinion polls.
What is clear is that the PUSC
has to rebuild and rid itself of
the image of corruption and
graft. But that may not be easy.
