Children Elect Arias
Not
only Costa Rican adults voted
yesterday, but, also the
children. Beginning at 8am,
thousands of children were on
hand at the Museo de los Niños
to cast their vote. Of course,
the childrens vote is not
counted, but it has become an
indicator of the election
results.
In 2002, the childrens vote was
close to the results that say
Abel Pacheco to power.
Yesterday's vote saw the
children voting for Oscar Arias
for president, but by only a
small margin.
The children who voted Arias
simply said that "he is good"
and that is why they voted for
him.
The project is to get children
involved in the country's
politics and prepare themselves
for when they are of age to
vote.
Yesterday's abstentism was on
average 35%. The province of
Limón had the greated abstentism
rate, 45%, followed by
Puntarenas at 42%.
