Colombia arrests Italian
suspected mafia coordinator
Colombian authorities have
arrested an Italian citizen
suspected of being Italian
mafia's coordinator in South
America, local media reported
Tuesday.
Renato Zappa, 65, who is also on
the list of wanted in Italy, was
captured in Acacias, a town in
the central Colombian department
of Meta.
The investigation by the
Colombian authorities show Zappa
was sending 400 to 500 kg of
cocaine to Europe each month.
"Zappa is considered to be the
Colombian drug contact for the
Angrageta mafia, setting prices
and arranging transport routes,"
said Colonel Jaime Gutierrez,
deputy director of Colombia's
Judicial Investigation
Department.
"The Italian authorities told us
he had contact with the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia (FARC) and the Norte
del Valle drug cartel,"
Gutierrez said. FARC is the
largest rebel group in Colombia.
The extradition of Zappa, who
has lived in Colombia since the
1990s, could take place soon
once the Mexico's Supreme Court
and President Alvaro Uribe give
the green light.
Colombia is the world's largest
producer of cocaine.
