GET TO KNOW YOUR NEXT PRESIDENT:
OSCAR ARIAS SANCHEZ

Born: Oct. 13, 1940, in Heredia, Costa Rica.

Political experience:  Minister of national planning and political economy under President José Figueres in the 1970s. Elected to the legislature, he won the presidency in 1986 on the ticket of the center-left National Liberation Party. After leaving office in 1990, he established a foundation, Arias for Peace, which promotes dialogue about peace, gender, inequality and other subjects between disparate sectors of civilian and government life.

Education: PhD in political science from the University of Essex, United Kingdom.

Nobel: Won the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize for his successful efforts to forge peace in Central America.

Family: Divorced from Margarita Penón; they have two grown children.
