Cuba, Venezuela Back Bolivia
Cuba and Venezuela are the first
countries to offer aid to flood
victims in Bolivia, where
several areas were declared
under state of emergency due to
recent strong rains, President
Evo Morales has confirmed.
Morales said that Venezuela is
sending food and material aid,
while Cuba offered six tons of
medicine and 140 physicians to
assist some 55,000 victims.
The Bolivian president flew over
the affected areas in the
eastern region of Santa Cruz,
and said he was concerned about
the devastation in crops,
housings, roads and cattle.
The UN Development Program has
also promised a financial
package of $500,000 for food and
assisting victims and offered
$2.5 million for reconstruction
works, Morales indicated.
Venezuela and Cuba were also the
first ones to cooperate with
Bolivia in pushing ahead new
social programs.
About 26 Cuban education experts
are in La Paz to help put in
place the campaign to eradicate
illiteracy. They will train a
group of Bolivian colleague in
the use of the audiovisual
method “Yo Si Puedo” (Yes, I
Can), to teach over one million
people how to read and write in
30 months.
