January Closed Violently
Last month closed with a long list of violent deaths. A total of 81 people died in January, 5 more than the same period last year.

Aquatic accidents topped the list. In one week alone there 7 drownings. A couple in San Gerardo Dota lost their lives in an attempt to save their two young children, along with a resident of the area who gave his life to help. In Sarapiquí, a grandmother lost her life while trying to save her 9 year old granddaughter and another little girl.

Traffic accidents resulted in 32 fatalities, while deaths from firearms and knives totalled 17.

Fire claimed two lives. January was also a record month for firefighters who responded to an increased number of calls. On average, firefighters responded to 85 emergencies daily, while the average during 2005 was 50.

Authorities are keeping their fingers crossed that January is not setting the pace for what is to come during the next 11 months of this year.
