Debt for Education and the
Environment
Three influential U.S. senators
made a pledge to promote
pardoning the Costa Rican debt
with the United States on the
condition that those funds would
be invested on improving
education and the protection of
the environment.
The announcement was made by
President Oscar Arias while in
Washington, where he met with
Democrats Harry Reid (Nevada)
and Tom Harkin (Iowa), and
Republican Richard Lugar
(Indiana).
The Costa Rican debt to the
United States currently stands
at us$103.6 million, according
to Finance Minister Guillermo
Zuñiga.
President Arias pointed out that
developed nations have chosen to
“punish” Costa Rica, rather than
“rewarding” it for its efforts
to improve the quality of life
of its people, by claiming that
the small Central American
nation has better social and
economical indexes than its
neighbors.
