Panama President Presents National Plan
Panama President Martin Torrijos is meeting Wednesday with diverse national sectors to analyze a National Agreement for Development.

The president announced some days ago that to achieve that goal, he will request support from the UN through the Ibero-American Office.

Torrijos said he will take the first steps today to achieve a national agreement on policies that guarantee the nation s development.

According to analysts, the Executive plan is a response to groups opposed to the modernization of the Panama Canal Zone, because construction of three additional locks, at a cost of 5.2 billion dollars, does not include a social development strategy.

The 2.12 million Panamanians will decide on the expansion of the Canal Zone in a national referendum on October 22.
