Energy
Solutions and RECOPE Work to
Ensure Environmental Safety in
Costa Rica
Energy Solutions International,
the Houston-based leading global
supplier of oil and gas pipeline
management software, today
announced that it will provide
PipelineManager® software to the
Refinadora Costarricense de
Petroleo (RECOPE) - the state
monopoly petroleum company that
handles all oil and gas
pipelines in Costa Rica.
RECOPE, in conjunction with
Techint S.A. de C.V., selected
PipelineManager to help ensure
pipeline safety and
environmental protection through
the product's real-time
modeling, leak detection and
location, and batch tracking
capabilities.
"As a company that is very
concerned about the environment
and the natural beauty of Costa
Rica, it was important to us to
choose a system that will enable
us to be as proactive as
possible regarding detecting and
preventing pipeline leaks," said
Javier Abarca Jimenez, project
leader for RECOPE.
"Techint has worked closely with
Energy Solutions in the past,
and this project with RECOPE was
a natural fit for their
PipelineManager leak detection
system and the extensive
experience of the Energy
Solutions team," added Daniel
Elias, engineering director of
Techint.
RECOPE's pipeline network system
extends from the Caribbean coast
to the coast of the Pacific
Ocean, having a total length of
226 kilometers (140.43 miles).
The pipeline's route includes
rough mountain paths between
Limon and Cartago that require
the product to climb up to 1,545
feet above sea level. About
4,000 to 5,000 cubic meters of
products are transported through
the network.
"Energy Solutions and RECOPE
understand the importance of
using leak detection technology
to help safeguard against
possible environmental hazards,"
said Al Jacob, Energy Solutions
chief executive officer. "We are
looking forward to this project
and a long-term relationship
with RECOPE."
RECOPE is the Costa Rican
state-owned company that
imports, refines, distributes
and commercializes fossil fuels.
Gasoline, diesel, aviation fuels
and natural gas prices are set
by RECOPE, which need approval
by the state agency that
regulates public prices and
services.
