Nicaragua Denies Deal with
Striking Docs
The strike by Nicaraguan
pro-salary doctors continues
Monday after the Treasury
Minister Mario Flores denied an
alleged agreement with strikers
demanding a 30 percent wage
raise.
Saturday, Medical Federation
leader Elio Artola announced the
end of the five-month strike,
asserting the Executive had
agreed to grant a 43.75 percent
wage increase, and medical
services in public hospitals
would be totally resumed on
April 17.
However, the Treasury minister
debunked Artola´s statements by
affirming that any agreement
must be set within the salary
policy of short-term objectives.
Last week, the government
decided to give a 30 percent
wage increase to the Health
Workers Federation, allot an
additional two million dollars
for medical supplies and close
private centers operating within
its health facilities, among
other benefits.
That adjustment was not accepted
by the striking physicians,
although President Enrique
Bolaños warned this would be the
last offer.
