Tropical Storm Beta Heads To
Nicaragua
Tropical Storm Beta is the
season's 23rd tropical storm,
the most since record keeping
began in 1851, is expected to
reach hurricane intensity by
today (Friday) with winds of up
tp 100 mph,
capable of unleashing
devastating and potentially
deadly floods
The storm is expected to become
a hurricane in the week's end
and will likely hit a stretch of
Nicaragua's coastline early
Saturday.
Beta is expected to dump up to
15 inches across western Panama,
Costa Rica, northeastern
Honduras and Nicaragua.
Tropical Storm Alpha formed last
week, the first time a letter
from the Greek alphabet has been
used because the list of storm
names was exhausted.
Hurricane Beta may eventually
cross into the Pacific. Whether
it's rechristened with a Pacific
Basin storm name (most likely "Pilar")
or continues as "Beta" will
depend on whether it remains
intact during its journey across
Central America.
