More Leatherbacks
Since the spawning season began
in the Costa Rican Northern
Pacific, in October, the arrival
of 43 leatherback turtles -six
of them for the first time -
brought happiness to the
scientific and environmental
communities around the world.
This is a sign for the
comeback of a species that is on
the brink of extinction, after
97% of the leatherbacks disappeared in
the last 20 years, and only an
estimated 1,700 adult females
remain.
Grande Beach, in Santa
Cruz, Guanacaste, is the only
site in the Pacific Ocean where
these turtles spawn.
Scientists
are analyzing the reasons for
the uniqueness of this place.
