Fidel Castro Links Socialism and Economy
“Advances towards socialism strengthen concepts of economic science,” said Cuban President Fidel Castro, addressing the 6th Congress of Economists and Accountants.

In his speech at the Havana’s International Conference Center, the Cuban leader stated, “there is no political system, or social justice, or socialism without economy.”

He praised the economists’ behavior, honesty, training and ethics, in researching, providing solutions and spreading knowledge.

Energy conservation, programs implemented by the government to benefit people and the island’s development perspectives for the coming years were also issues tackled Friday night in the event.

The meeting of the National Association of Economists and Accountants of Cuba (ANEC, in Spanish) also analyzed the experts’ contributions to the programs aimed at facing corruption and the need for strict economic and financial control.

Participants in the congress highlighted the measures adopted by the country’s authorities like inspection of social objectives in state entities, reordering foreign trade, centralization of convertible pesos and bank regulations.

Experts will look at public budgets, planning, monetary circulation, costs, quality, taxes, prices and trade, among other aspects.

The congress will wind up today with the election of the new ANEC National Committee, which will implement proposals formulated during the meeting.
