Bodies Recovered, Investigation
Into Cause Begins Following
Crash of Small Plane Friday
Rescue workers were able to
recover the bodies of Luis
Alonso Cantillano Calvo,
Guillermo Picado Corella and
Juan Diego Marenco Herrera, 34,
38 and 23 years old (the pilot,
co-pilot and passenger) of the
singe engine Cessna that slammed
into a mountain peak Friday
mid-day.
A heavy mist cover the area of
the accident that is guarding,
temporarily, the cause of the
accident, which according to
preliminary reports, inclement
weather forced the experienced
pilots off course and with only
several meters to spare, the
right wing of the plane touched
the mountain peak known as el
cerro La Potenciana, 6km from
Palam de Puriscal.
The flight was a routine trip
that left the Tobías Bolaños,
west of San José for a 23-35
minute flight to Parrita, near
Quepos on the Pacific coast.
The day yesterday was filled
with pain as some family members
and friends of the deceased
decided to visit the area.
Alejandro Cantillano, the
brother of the pilot, took part
of the rescue mission to recover
the dead body of his brother,
along with Red Cross workers,
which was a distance of 30
metres from the main wreckage.
The bodies of the other two were
found together with the main
fuselage, tied in by their
restraint belts and the
instrument panel between them.
Aviación Civil (Civil Aviation)
began their investigation to
determine the exact cause of the
accident once the bodies were
removed from the wreckage. They
will be focusing on three main
elements: pilot error,
mechanical failure and weather
conditions. The small plane
crashed only 11 minutes into
it's flight.
