Venezuela, US agree to improve ties
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ali Rodriguez
said Friday that his country will try to improve relations with the
United States.
"We coincide in that there exist sensitive aspects that we have to work
on, little by little, in order to reach the best possible bilateral
relations," Rodriguez said in a statement issued after his meeting
Thursday with US ambassador to Caracas, William Brownfield.
The foreign minister said the two sides agreed to cooperate on a set of
practical aspects, such as energy and the fight against terrorism and
drug-trafficking.
The meeting served to establish mechanisms of communication and
consultation aimed at working together in order to reach the best
possible relations between the two countries, Rodriguez said.
This meeting took place at a time when the Venezuelan government wants
to have positive relations with the United States.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Thursday his country wants to put
the issue of relations with the United States in a positive perspective.
"We want to keep on sending them (the United States) 1.5 million barrels
of oil per day," Chavez said. "We want to keep on doing business."
Relations between Caracas and Washington have been tense since Chavez
took office.
Chavez has repeatedly accused Washington of planning to assassinate him
and initiate a military intervention against Venezuela, which is the
world's fifth-largest oil exporter and produces more than 3 million
barrels of crude oil a day.
About 15 percent of oil imported by the United States comes from
Venezuela.
