Colombian navy seizes 1.5 tons of cocaine
The Colombian navy on Sunday captured 1.5
tons of pure cocaine in northern province of Sucre amid the newest
battle in Colombia's drug war, a navy spokesman said.
The cocaine was discovered Sunday in jungle near Caribbean beach,
contained in more than 100 plastic packets, local media quoted the
spokesman as saying.
As estimated by the navy, the drug traffickers could have planned to
carry the pure cocaine, which was valued at 40 million US dollars, to a
Caribbean island country first and then the United States.
Colombia has achieved success in the war against drug trafficking since
the beginning of 2005. The navy captured 1.4 tons of cocaine in
south-western Narino in March and another 1.2 tons last month.
Colombia is considered the world's largest drug producer and exporter,
with an annual average of 580 tons, which are mainly destined to the
United States and Europe.
