Search for missing Australian intensifies
The search for a Melbourne
university student has intensified in Costa Rica, with his father,
friends and authorities scouring the region to find vital clues.
Brendan Kieran Dobbins, 24, has been missing since 7am last Thursday,
Costa Rica time.
The RMIT student was last seen more than a week ago at the coastal
resort of Tamarindo.
His father, Brian Dobbins, has arrived in Costa Rica, joining a search
group of Brendan's friends.
Australian consul official, Chris Munn, has made the trip from Mexico to
help the search party.
Land, sea and air searches for Brendan have proven fruitless.
Speaking from Costa Rica, Brendan's friend, Peter Nienaber, said the
search group was "wrecked", as they spent many hours tracking down more
information.
"Everything's as it was," Mr Nienaber said.
"We have spoken to the local police, the Red Cross, but there is no news
of Brendan."
Mr Nienaber said the group would continue its intensive search for
Brendan and try to find any information or witnesses of his
disappearance.
Brendan's father met with officials from the Canadian embassy and Costa
Rica's rural guard officers, Channel 9 reported today.
Mr Dobbins told Nine he would not speculate on how his son disappeared.
"We're hopeful of a positive outcome," Mr Dobbins said.
Brendan, an exchange student at the University of Florida, was in
Tamarindo with four other university friends.
He has not been seen since a local DJ saw him walking on the beach
towards his hotel about 7am last Thursday.
Mr Nienaber said the response from the Costa Rican authorities was as
good as could be expected for a third-world country.
"We're trying to keep a brave face and stay as positive as we can not
only for ourselves but for Brendan's family and everyone back home," Mr
Nienaber said from San Jose airport.
"Our fingers are crossed and our prayers go out to Brendan's family for
a good result."
