Mexico not to extradite drug lord to US
Mexico would not extradite presumed drug
lord Osiel Cardenas to the United States until the end of proceedings
against him in Mexico, the Attorney General's Office confirmed Friday.
The office made the clarification several days after Foreign Secretary
Luis Ernesto Derbez signed an agreement with the US side on Cardenas'
extradition
Derbez signed the agreement with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
during her trip to Mexico on Monday. The US had been demanding the
extradition since Cardenas was arrested in March 2003.
Cardenas was captured following a shoot-out with police and soldiers on
the US-Mexico border. He is currently awaiting trial on charges of
marijuana and cocaine trafficking, organized crime and money laundering
in Mexico. In the United States, he faces 17 charges of drug trafficking
and money laundering as well as threatening federal agents.
According to US and Mexican investigators, Cardenas was leader of the
Gulf cartel, a gang based in Tamaulipas state responsible for moving
tons of Colombian cocaine into Texas and on to all over the United
States.
