Police Confiscated $400,000
The uneasiness of a man
attracted the attention of agents carrying a routine inspection of
arriving passengers at Juan Santamaria International Airport.
The officers inspected the man's luggage and that of a woman traveling
with him, and found over $400,000 cash, in $100 and $20 bills, concealed
in their suitcases.
The couple, both Mexicans, were supposed to continue to Panama and they
did not have an explanation for carrying such an unusual and undeclared
amount of money.
Police disclosed that the money was wrapped in plastic and that the
packages were smeared with grease and coffee, a way to mislead the dogs
used for the detection of drugs.
Of the confiscated funds, 60 percent will be allocated for the treatment
of drug addicts, 30 percent to equipment and training of law-enforcement
agents, and 10 percent to the operation of the Drug Institute.
