Electrical Power Rationing May Be Reality in 2007
A manager at the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) confirmed
that come 2007 there will be a drop in the supply of electrical power in
the country.
Carlos Obregón, says that the rationing of electrical power will be a
reality if the the thermal generating plant Garabito in Miramar (Puntarenas)
does come into production. The plant has a cost of us$162.4 milliond
dollars.
The situation is complicated by problems related to the hydroelectric
project Pacuare when the Secretaría Técnica Ambiental (SETENA) where
irregularities were found at the administrative level and the program
was shelved.
According to ICE, demand for electrical power is increasing annually at
a rate of 5.3% and according to Obregón, an economic increase and the
approval of the Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) - Free Trade Agreement -
could see a higher demand than that estimated.
Obregón added that ICE will not be able to guarantee the supply of
electricity come 2007 and rationing may be necessary.
