Cuba rejects US attack on its electoral system
Cuba's Parliament Adviser Jorge Lezcano on Wednesday accused the United
States of trying to prevent the world from knowing Cuba's political
system in order to "undermine the political credibility of the island."
Addressing a gathering at the National Hotel in Havana, Lezcano said
Washington attacks Cuba's democratic and electoral process in a plan
approved by US President George W. Bush last May in an attempt to
isolate and destroy the Cuban revolution.
The advisor said the plan seeks to change the present Cuban electoral
system with the one of the United States, adding the present US
administration "intends to turn the electoral issue as part of the
permanent hostility against Cuba."
The present nomination of candidates in Cuba is done in absolute
transparency, he added.
On Monday, Cuba presented a document denouncing the maneuvers of the
United States in condemning Havana at the Geneva Human Rights
Commission.
The document came after the Feb. 28 US State Department report on human
rights practices in Cuba took President Fidel Castro's government to
task for violations of civil and political rights such as freedoms of
speech, press and assembly.
