Australian Student Still Missing in Costa Rica
Costa Rican authorities are still searching for a Melbourne university
student missing for now six days.
RMIT University student Brendan Dobbins, 24, is on an exchange program
to the University of Florida in the United States. Mr Dobbins, from Glen
Waverley, went to Costa Rica to celebrate the annual Spring Break
holiday with friends.
The student was last seen leaving a bar to go to Tamarindo Beach early
last Friday, but searchers have been unable to find him.
His sister-in-law, Brownyn Cooke, says the family has no idea what
happened.
"Most people would assume that he might have gone into the water when he
was on the beach that morning," she said.
"I guess other theories would be that he met with some kind of
misadventure or crime on the beach."
But Ms Cooke says the family does not have any evidence to point in that
direction at the moment.
She says the family is devastated by the disappearance.
"They're a small, close family so they're quite shocked and upset at the
moment," she said.
Mr Dobbin's father is flying to Costa Rica today.
Australia does not have an embassy in Costa Rica; the Department of
Foreign Affairs says Costa Rican authorities are liaising with the
Australian embassy in Mexico City and with officials in Canberra.
