Former Nicaraguan president to run for president
Former Nicaraguan president Daniel
Ortega was chosen on Saturday by the Sandinista National Liberation
Front party as its candidate to run for president in 2006.
The party held a congress in Matagalpa, north of Managua, late Saturday,
unanimously agreeing on the decision.
Ortega came to power after the overthrow of the US-backed dictatorship
of Anastasio Somoza, but lost the 1990, 1996 and 2001presidential
elections.
Herty Lewites, the former Managua mayor who was vying for the candidacy,
was expelled from the party.
Lewites had urged the party to hold primary elections to pick acandidate.
