Argentine president expresses support to Bolivian counterpart
Argentine President Nestor Kirchner held a telephone conversation on
Monday with his Bolivian counterpart Carlos Mesa to express his
solidarity with and offer support to Mesa in the crisis that jolts the
neighboring country.
A government spokesperson said it was a "long" conversation.
Kirchner decided to stay in this city and suspended his official trip on
the agenda to "closely follow the issue of the political crisis taking
place in Bolivia," the spokesperson said.
On Monday, Mesa submitted his resignation to Congress after warning that
a wave of protests against his 15-month-old government may soon leave
Bolivia's largest cities isolated by road blockades.
Legislators could decide as early as Tuesday whether to accept the
resignation, which followed several days of street protests calling for
a privatized water company to immediately stop operating and demanding
higher taxes on oil companies.
Mesa took office in October 2003, succeeding President Gonzalo Sanchez
de Lozada, who was also forced to resign in the wake of street protests.
