"Card/Palm Reading" Is A Scam, Police Say

"Card/Palm Reading" Is A Scam, Police Say
The Unidad de Investigación Especializada del Ministerio de Seguridad Pública believes that those who dedicate themselves to tarot card and palm reading, and who frequently place ads in the local newspaper advertising their "powers", are a fraud.

"These people take advantage at the innocence and greed of people and because of the lack of complaints, could soon become an organized crime against the public", told Paul Chaves head of the special police unit.

Police investigators are on the trails on the scam artists but due to the lack of complaints filed, police are impeded from taking a strong action.

Chaves added that "shame that one feels after being cheated in this way  stops them from filing complaints". Police believe that there are more than 122 businesses in San José alone that offer this kind of service, most working without business permits or licenses.

Ads in the local print newspapers appear daily for "spiritual counseling", offering services of card or palm reading to help with marriage problems and with work and family matters. The ads claim to be able to solve one's problems, but rarely such is the case.

In areas like Hatillo, there are dozens who offer "reading of the cards" for a few thousand colones. No sign is posted on the front door, you know it exists because you are being brought there by someone who had been going there for a while and swears that the "card reader" is genuine, not like most of the others.

You enter into a small waiting room, anxiously waiting your turn among several people ahead of you.Once you sit at the table, a small conversation is part of the "magic" as the cards are shuffled and placed before you. The cards you choose, the way you cut the deck, are all part of the final result, where you are told about your fortune, love and health.

You have a secret lover, a dark haired woman... You are going to come into money... Travel is in the near future... as you listen intently, riveted to your seat and your mind whirrs in all sorts of directions.

Could all this be true? Am I going to get that lucky break after all? Dark haired woman? Who could that be? Uhm... are all thoughts that leave with you after having your cards read.

Of course, this cannot be a one time thing. You need to visit back in a few weeks. And  you are hooked.
