Costa Ricans Would Ratify CAFTA
Many adults in Costa Rica want the country’s lawmakers to endorse a
proposed commerce agreement, according to a poll by Demoscopia.
41 per cent of respondents believe the Congress should vote in favour of
the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).
In May 2004, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua
agreed to the trade deal. The Dominican Republic followed suit in
August. The agreement - which would reduce or eliminate taxes and
tariffs on imports - still has to be approved by each country’s
legislative branch.
In December 2003, Costa Rica temporarily opted out of CAFTA
negotiations. President Abel Pacheco was unsure about granting access to
the country’s telecommunications and insurance industries to overseas
conglomerates.
Otto Guevara - presidential candidate for the Libertarian Movement (ML)
- has suggested holding a nationwide referendum to ratify the agreement.
The vote would have to take place six months prior to the next election,
tentatively scheduled for February 2006.
