Costa Rica To Create Anti-Terrorist Unit
The vice-minister of Security, María Fullmen Salazar, confirms that
Costa Rica and the other Central American nations are working on forming
an anti-terrorist group. The decision was made at the Cumbre de
Presidentes Centroamericanos at the beginning of February of this year
in Honduras.
Last Thursday, the Ministers and vice-ministers of Security for the
various nations of Central America met in Honduras to discuss the
decision made by the presidents.
The anti-terrorist group would be a specialized unit that can mobilize
quickly and hit hard against any terrorist threat in Central America.
Discussions are based on the functions and the make up of the new group.
The idea is create a unit that is made of agents of the national police
forces in the region. April 29 is the next date that the ministers will
meet again in Tegucigalpa.
One of the issues not resolved is how the group will be financed. The
possibility exists that the United States could be involved in providing
some financial aid to the unit.
The rising possibility of a coalition between Al-Qaeda and the
youth gang known as MARAS is threatening the region of a possible
terrorist attack. The MARAS are concentrated in Honduras but have lately
believed to have been expanding their operations that could include
Costa Rica.
