Regional Food Seminar to be held in Belize
A five-day seminar on the role
of information and communication tools for implementation of food and
nutrition and security plans in the Caribbean gets underway in Belize on
March 14.
The Port of Spain-based Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development
Institute (CARDI) said that the seminar aims to sensitize Caribbean
policy makers to the linkages among agriculture, nutrition, health and
trade with respect to enhancing food and nutrition security, reported
the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC).
It is also aimed at reviewing the status of the implementation of food
and nutrition plans as they relate to Caribbean food and nutrition
security, CARDI said.
The food balance sheet data demonstrate that although the regional food
system has achieved some success in adequate overall availability of
food, it is failing to meet the nutritional and health requirements of
the region"s population.
CARDI said particular emphasis would also be given to the use of
information and communication tools (ICTs) to facilitate the
implementation of food and nutrition security plans and programs in the
Caribbean.
Participants from the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP)
will attend the five-day seminar.
"They will review the status of implementation of food and nutrition
plans as they relate to Caribbean food and nutrition security as well as
identify information and communication tools to be used to facilitate
the implementation of food and nutrition security plans and programs in
the Caribbean among others."
The seminar is being organized by the Technical Center for Agricultural
and Rural Co-operation in collaboration with CARDI, the Caribbean Food
and Nutrition Institute (CFNI), and the Belize government.
