Vietnamese fishermen tortured
Six Vietnamese fishermen surrendered to the Immigration Special Police, after denouncing alleged tortures by the captains of a Taiwanese fishing fleet based at the Pacific port of Puntarenas.

Immigration Police chief Luis Diego Solano confirmed the injuries that are the likely outcome of physical abuse. Later, five others joined their shipmates.

"They are terrified. They claim that Indonesian thugs are looking for them. We offered to take them to a shelter, but they chose to stay in a detention center, claiming that they are safer there.

The young Vietnamese tell horror stories of the mistreatment dealt to them by the Taiwanese captains, both at sea and at port. Residents in the area where the boats are docked in Puntarenas confirmed the physical abuse of the Vietnamese fishermen they have witnessed aboard the Asian boats.

Costa Rican and Taiwanese authorities are investigating the case and have taken the alleged victims under their wings.
