Colombia asks US to cut sentence on extradited murderer
Colombia's Supreme Court asked the United States to reduce a life
sentence of a extradited Colombian, judicial sources said Thursday.
Alex Restrepo was extradited to the United States on Oct. 27, 2000 and
was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of US officer Donald
Paganini on Aug. 27, 1999.
Under the extradition treaty, the United States cannot impose sentences
higher than those established in the Colombian legislation.
The court asked Colombian President Alvaro Uribe to press US authorities
to change the sentence issued by a New York judge.
The top tribunal said in a communique that it has decided to "ask the
President of the Republic to intensify diplomatic efforts at all levels
to obtain a rapid change of the life imprisonment, which is banned from
the national legislation."
The tribunal also asked Uribe to send a report on the steps taken by the
national government.
