Cuba to host Latin American Congress on Weeds
The 17th Congress of the Latin
American Association on Weeds will take place in Varadero next November
in order to exchange experience and know-how in this field, a member of
the Organizing Committee said today.
Hermenegildo Paredes, of that work group, told Prensa Latina that
debates related to integrated, sustainable and agroecological handling
of weeds, resistance of certain species, new herbicides and methods of
application head the event's agenda.
The meeting Hill also discuss chemical control of weeds, education and
technological transfer and environmental destination of herbicides.
For Cuba, this forum is of great importance, indicated the expert, as we
will have the opportunity to know and exchange criteria on techniques
and update procedures in the struggle against non-desirable plants
affecting main crops in the region.
Paredes sustained that there are over one hundred weed species in the
island, of which 30 are the most extended.
A very interesting aspect to be discussed at the Congress relates to
advances in the genetic field and the biological struggle to reduce
damage provoked by such plagues.
This will be the second occasion that Cuba hosts ALAM, in recognition of
the prestige achieved by the island in this field, said the specialist.
The Congress has as main sponsors Bayer CropScience, INICA S.A., Isagro,
Syngenta Iberoamericana and the Cuban ministries of Agriculture, Sugar
and High Education. The event will also have the collaboration of the
Institutes of Plant Health, Research on Sugar Cane Institute and the
Universities of Havana, Las Villas and Granma.
Together with this event will be held the 1st Iberoamerican Congress on
Weed Science.
