Villalobos Preliminary Hearing Ended, Announcement of Trial Expected
An email letter sent to it's
membership, the United Concerned Citizens & Residents (UCCR) group says
the preliminary hearing in the Osvaldo Villalobos case was concluded on
February 28.
In the letter, the members are told how Judge Castrillo demonstrated a
no-nonsense attitude throughout the hearing and strictly adhered to his
schedule. We expect his decision within several days, sending the case
to the Public Trial Court.
The UCCR is hopeful that a large number of investor accusations against
Osvaldo and his brother, Enrique Villalobos, will be dismissed by the
judge for a variety of reasons, but it would only be speculation at this
time to discuss numbers. "The number of remaining accusations are
important to us because it will affect the duration of the public
trial", the writer wrote.
The judge's decision is expected in the coming days, which is expected
to send the case to trial.
During the preliminary hearing the prosecution presented its case as
scheduled, and offered nothing new or surprising. The UCCR sees that as
good news, and eagerly await trial with the same empty evidence.
While Osvaldo ran the money exchange house known as Ofinter, Enrique
Villalobos Camacho, who has been missing since October of 2002 and is
listed on the INTERPOL wanted list, operated the high yield loan
business known as "the Brothers".
Thousands of investors have been left out in the cold, when Villalobos
decided to close the operation. Osvaldo was detained shortly after and
placed in preventive detention, first under house arrest and then in
jail, fearing he would flee the country like his brother and/or impede
the prosecution's investigation.
