Student Protests Force Saturday Classes, MEP Insists
Students demonstrations against the Costa Rican educational system in 35 schools in the first month of the school year must now make up the time on Saturdays, this according to Rocío Solís, Directora de Niñez del Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP).

Last week, disturbances took place at various schools by teachers who are unsatisfied with the administration's work.  Problems at five schools were: Liceo Teodoro Picado de Alajuelita, the Colegio de Rincón Grande de Pavas, the Escuela Dos Cercas de Desamparados, the Escuela José Rodríguez Martínez, en Aguas Zarcas, and the Colegio Técnico Profesional San Juan Sur de Tobosi.

This year there are more problems than normal between teachers, parents and administrators.  Families of the students and teachers backed the actions.

Solís was emphatic that the students have to complete the 200 day school calendar as set out by her Education Ministry and will take legal action against those teachers who boycott classes or stage more disturbances.

At the Colegio Técnico Profesional San Juan Sur de Tobosi, teachers are demanding the naming of a Principal, a position that has been vacant for two weeks. The District Supervisor is supposed to take the position temporarily until a permanent replacement is appointed, but this hasn't occurred either, according to a press release by the teacher's union Asociación de Profesores de Segunda Enseñanza (APSE).

Danilo Rojas, president of APSE, is urging students to attend classes notwithstanding the problems of disorder and the lack of interest by the MEP to resolve the problem.

Today, students at the Conservatorio Castella are planning not to attend classes to continue the protest.
