Costa Rica Intensifies Border Controls Against Rotavirus
The Costa Rican government intensified epidemiological controls on the
borders with Nicaragua and Panama to prevent diarrhea caused by
rotavirus from spreading, press reports said Wednesday.
Health Minister Maria del Rocio Saenz said the increased controls along
these borders will prevent the mass spread of the disease into the Costa
Rican territory.
The disease is serious in Costa Rica, although no children have been
killed by the disease until now, Saenz was cited by the press as saying.
About 321 cases of severe diarrhea and vomit caused by rotavirus among
children below nine years of age were reported in the department of
Chacarita in Puntarenas province.
The minister called on people to take hygiene measures to prevent the
disease.
According to the Health Ministry of Costa Rica, 1,668 cases of diarrhea
have been reported in the country this year without any deaths.
El Salvador has registered 71,000 cases of diarrhea with 20 children
dead. About 35,000 people were affected in Nicaragua, many of whom came
into Costa Rica across the border.
