Mexico rejects US report on
violence, human rights
The
Mexican government on Tuesday
rebuffed a US report on the
serious violence and human
rights problems in the country.
Patricia Olamendi, vice foreign
minister of Mexico, said her
government dose not accept the
Washington's "unilateral" and
"partial" report, although
Mexico will abide by the reports
issued by the United Nations and
the Organization of American
States (OAS).
The Washington report is based
"on very particular
considerations, which brutally
contrast with reports by the UN
and the Inter-American Human
Rights Commission (of the OAS)
which recognize the effort of
the Mexican government to solve
problems related to human
rights," Olamendi said.
The report on Mexico does not
contain "anything new," added
the official, and her government
is "responding to the majority
of recommendations made by the
UN and the OAS."
The US State Department on
Monday expressed its concern
over the "serious problems" of
violence associated with
drug-trafficking overflowing in
northern and southwestern
Mexico, and there remains a lot
to be done in the respect of
human rights in Mexico's
southern states of Chiapas,
Guerrero and Oaxaca.
