US-Venezuelan relations could improve: senator
US-Venezuelan relations could improve in the short term, US congressman Christopher Dodd, a Connecticut Democrat, was quoted by the El Universal daily as saying Tuesday.

The US senator said relations between the two countries are of great importance to the US Congress.

"We're here to see if we could start with new relations. It is worthless to keep on talking about what has happened. Washington will turn a new page in its relations with Caracas in the new year," Dodd said.

Dodd also held a meeting with representatives of the National Assembly, Supreme Court President Ivan Rincon, and members of civil organization.

Dodd and Rhode Island Republican Lincoln Chafee and Bill Nelson, a Democrat from Florida, concluded a three-day official visit Monday after meeting with President Hugo Chavez.

Colombian journalist dies after gunmen attack
A Colombian journalist died Tuesday after being shot by two gunmen in Cucuta, capital of Norte de Santander department, police said.

Julio Palacios was attacked on his way to work and died later in hospital, said Cucuta Police Commander Jose Henao.

Palacios, who worked for a Cucuta radio station, received death threats after making accusations of local government corruption on the radio.

It was not clear whether his murder was linked to the threats. The police are trying to capture the gunmen.

Colombia has one of the world's highest homicide rates, with 20,000 murders recorded in 2004.

Landslide kills at least three children in Mexico
Landslides killed at least three children early Tuesday morning following heavy rains in the northeastern Mexican state of Baja California.

Local authorities confirmed the deaths of the children occurred in the San Antonio de los Buenos district of west Tijuana.

The civil security office of Tijuana said a five-year-old child died at home when a landslide crushed his house. But his mother and brother are safe.

A nine-year-old girl and her teenager sister were found dead at their home after the landslides devastated the area together with floods, said Jose Rosas, a technical coordinator of the office.

Storms also killed 13 people in the US state of California.
