CNC Approves Concession to Run San José - Caldera Highway
Costa Rica's national concessions council (CNC) has awarded the concession of the San José-Caldera highway to the Autopistas del Sol consortium, CNC project engineer Guillermo Ramírez told BNamericas.

The CNC will send the documents concerning the concessions approval to the comptroller general during the third week of August. We expect the comptroller to reach a decision within 45 days," Ramírez said.

Once the country's comptroller general approves the awarding, Autopistas del Sol would operate the highway instead of Concesiones Viales (Covisa), which pulled out of the project in November 2004.

Works totaling about us$150 million on the 76.8km highway include improvement, rehabilitation, construction, operation and maintenance of the road and will be divided into three stretches: San José-Ciudad Colón (14.2km), Ciudad Colón-Orotina (38.8km) and Orotina-Caldera (23.8km).

The highway is "crucial for the nation's import-export economy and for the evident benefits it will bring, especially in the transit time of merchandise and people," public works minister Randall Quirós was quoted as saying by local press.

The Autopistas del Sol consortium is formed by enterprises Promotora de Infraestructuras, Infraestructuras SDC Costa Rica, Itinere CR Valle del Sol and M&S Desarrollos Internacionales.

Concession of the highway would be for 25 years.
