Costa Rica Sets Conditions for
Supporting Flores' OAS Candidacy
Costa Rican President Abel
Pacheco said yesterday he will
support former Salvadorean
President Francisco Flores'
candidacy to the post of
secretary-general of the
Organization of American States
(OAS) if the latter can prove
his innocence of charges against
him.
Flores, who was elected by
Central American leaders as the
region's candidate for OAS
secretary-general on Nov. 19, is
accused of corruption by the
Farabundo Marti Front of
National Liberation, the
principal opposition party in El
Salvador.
Pacheco was cited Saturday by
the press as saying that it will
be prudent "if he (Flores) is
innocent, our government will
support him, otherwise, we will
evidently withdraw our support."
The post of OAS secretary
general has been vacant after
the resignation of former Costa
Rican president Miguel Angel
Rodriguez over alleged
involvement in a corruption
scandal in his Costa Rica.
Taiwanese Fishing Boat Explodes
off Costa Rica
Eight crew members were missing
after a Taiwanese fishing boat
exploded in the Pacific in
Matapalo in the Osa Peninsula,
Costa Rican officials said.
The Shin Jyi Wanq exploded late
Friday 92 kilometers (57 miles)
off the Pacific coast, and the
Taiwanese captain was missing,
along with his seven Chinese
crew members.
The Ministerio de Seguridad
Publica issued a statement that
the Costa Rican patrol boat
Pancha Carrasco had found the
floating, burned-out hulk of the
Taiwanese vessel. .
Captain Tang Wen Sheng, 32,
mechanic Chi Xing Chin, 20, Li
Peixon, 20, Liu Qingwei, 20,
Teng Xian Min, 20, Gong Junqiang,
20, Huang Ke, 19, and Li
Changjie, 20, were feared lost.
The ship had left the Pacific
port of Puntarenas and was
headed
towards
Bahía de Charco Azul,
Panama.
Saturday morning the whole crew
was rescued by boat flying the
Belize flag, carrying the entire
crew to shore in Puntarenas.
