Pope Points out Tico Solidarity
President Abel Pacheco met with Pope
John Paul II in the Vatican and the leader of the Catholic Church remembered
his visit to Costa Rica in 1983 and pointed out the solidarity, justice, and
peace that he knows are characteristic of the Costa Rican society.
President Pacheco, who met alone with the Pope for eight minutes, was
evidently moved when he came out of the room where the meeting was held, and
admitted the experience had been very exciting.
John Paul II sent his blessings to Ticos.
This was one of the highlights of a 10-day visit by the President of Costa
Rica to Italy.
High Tariffs Draw Fire from the U.S.
Fifteen Latin American countries -
Costa Rica, Venezuela, Mexico, and Argentina among them - are in a list of
55 nations and three economic groups quoted in a U.S. report as the ones
with tariffs that are damaging for U.S. exporters.
With over 500 pages, the report is made annually, it analyzes each nation in
the list, and allows the U.S. Government to assess its trade situation with
those countries and to adopt strategies to negotiate solutions.

Inflation Decelerates
The variation of the index of
consumer prices -or inflation- was 0.46 percent in March, after it had been
above 1 percent in the preceding five months.
The cumulate inflation from January through March reached 3.49 percent,
while the figure corresponding to the last 12 months that ended in March was
11.34 percent
International Marine Corridor
The governments of Costa Rica, Panama,
Colombia, and Ecuador made a commitment to establish a marine corridor on the
Pacific Ocean, which will run from Cocos Island to the Galapagos (Ecuador), and
that will take in Coiba Island in Panama, and Malpelo and Gorgona islands in
Colombia.
The Conservation Marine Corridor of the Tropical Eastern Pacific is a unique
experience in the world.
