About Dr. Mona
Barbera

MONA BARBERA, PH.D is a licensed
psychologist practicing in Boston, MA and
Providence, RI. She specializes in couples
therapy, and provides workshops for couples,
couples therapy training workshops for
psychotherapists, and speaks on topics
regarding couples relationships.
Mona’s career started out with acting, in
Chicago and Hollywood. In Chicago she was
co-founder of two repertory groups. In
Hollywood she studied with Donna Gerard,
went on many auditions, and obtained a few
minor parts.
She then switched careers to psychology and
obtained her B.A in psychology from Antioch
West, her M.Ed. from the University of
Vermont, and her Ph.D. from New York
University.
Mona pursued advanced training in the
then-popular Psychosynthesis model, and
co-led workshops at Omega Institute and
privately.
During her many years as a trauma
specialist, she presented numerous talks and
workshops on child and adult abuse topics.
She is the past President of the Program
Committee of the New England Society for the
Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation, and a
past board member of the same organization.
After switching to the couples therapy
field, Mona obtained advanced certification
in Imago Relationship Therapy. She has
published academic articles on the Imago
model in The Journal of Imago Relationship
Therapy and for The Journal of
Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, and she
has authored a chapter in Imago Relationship
Therapy: Perspectives on Theory, by Luquet,
Hannah and Hunt.
Mona has completed all levels of training in
the popular Internal Family Systems model,
and is an Assistant Trainer for it’s parent
organization, The Center for Self
Leadership. She co-leads private trainings
for psychotherapists in the IFS model.
Mona has offered workshops on couples for
the yearly conference on Internal Family
Systems (6 years), Rhode Island College (2
years), and privately.
