resources wasted. This 'weight' station sits
abandoned for years on the Inter American
Highway east of Esparsa. The station on both
sides of the road was built three years ago,
never used and now totally abandoned. A sign
telling of the future still sits there.

Sand and Sea to
Spare in Costa Rica
THE Nicoya Peninsula juts off Costa Rica
into the Pacific Ocean like a misshapen
ear. It is rugged terrain, formed by the
string of volcanoes inland. Other than a
few large beach resorts in the far
north, Nicoya's coastline has missed
much of the development that has spread
across the country.
In a search for an affordable, relaxed
beach vacation, I first visited Nicoya
in January 2002, traveling to Montezuma,
a small town on the bottom tip of the
peninsula, and returned last year. Once
an active fishing village, Montezuma has
developed a reputation as a backpacker
haven, a beachside Katmandu.

Yellow Journalism
Normally, we don't give two hoots what
our competition is talking about us
behind our backs. Hey, we are the small
publication that grew. And, like the 'eveready'
bunny, we keep on going.
In yesterday's publication of
AmCostarica, James (Jay) Brodell, editor
of that publication, in a report of the
New Fantasy Massage closing by the
Municipality of San José last Friday,
made the sure to mention that the web
page by that business was designed by
istarmedia, owned and operated by yours
truly and also publishes
insidecostarica.com.

TRADE-BRAZIL:
Shrimp - New Source of Tension with U.S.
Brazil's shrimp exports could
follow the footsteps of Chile's salmon, a successful fish-farming product that
swiftly conquered markets overseas but for which it suffered threats of trade
barriers in the United States.
Brazil's shrimp production has been growing by more than 50 percent a year, from
3,600 tons in 1997 to 40,000 tons in 2003. Exports reached 258 million dollars
last year.
