Inside of the store room at the Ministerio de
Seguridad of firearms seized: a total of 16.000 are
held in storage, of which 3.000 were added this year
alone. According to Ministerial figures, 43.000
persons are licensed to carry a firearm, while it is
estimated at 280.000 persons actually own one.
Firearms account for more than 50% of all murders in
Costa Rica.
