installed as far back as 70 years ago.

Teacher's Strike
Continues: Day 9
Yesterday,
a judge declared the teacher's strike illegal.
According to a source at the Education Ministry, the
government can now apply sanctions against teachers
who do not return to the classrooms. >more

Education and Finance Ministers announced
Alberto Dent
was named new Minister of Finance yesterday, and
will assume functions from the 1st of July. Also,
Manuel Antonio Bolaños (vice-minister of Atmosphere
and Energy) will be the new Minister of Education.

In order to
emit a more secure currency note, the board of
directors of the Banco Central De Costa Rica - the
Central Bank - has decided to remove from national
circulation, effective the 1st of January 2004,

oil firm caught amid feud
• Colombia,
Nicaragua dispute island rights
For
Latinos, this Caribbean island is an
increasingly popular honeymoon spot. For
Metairie oil explorers MKJ Xplorations Inc.,
it stands as a reminder that wooing Latin
American governments for the right to do
business there can sometimes make for a rocky
marriage.
The Nicaraguan
government recently granted MKJ and three
other small U.S. firms rights to explore for
oil in the area a few miles west of San
Andres. Unfortunately for the drillers,
Nicaragua has a rival for their affections.

Powell
Assails Cuba at OAS Assembly
U.S.
Secretary of State Colin Powell spoke out against
the Cuban government Monday during the 33rd general
assembly of the Organisation of American States
(OAS), and he insinuated that differences with some
Latin American countries about the Iraq war are a
thing of the past.
Cuba, which was expelled from the OAS in the 1960s,
was the major absence but also Monday's protagonist
of the assembly, which Chile's President Ricardo
Lagos inaugurated Sunday in Santiago. The meeting of
the foreign ministers of the 34 member states is to
wrap up Tuesday with a renewed commitment to the
hemisphere's democratic governance. >more
