The child suffered second-degree burns over 70% of the baby’s body, the Red Cross said.
After the baby fell into the beans, the child’s parents attempted to rush the child in their vehicle to the hospital in Guápiles, some 25 kilometers away, but the family’s vehicle broke down 4 kilometers before reaching the hospital.
An ambulance later responded to the scene, transporting the child to the hospital in Guápiles for first aid before the child was transferred in critical condition to the National Children’s Hospital.
It is not yet known how the baby managed to fall into the boiling pot of beans.
